Thank you everyone - glad you all liked it :)
JKM I made sure I wore gloves when I put this rangoli...
No Lakshmi and Lata - my hubby does not like pizza or anything related and he does not fancy eating out at all so it is always home food for us...
I like your wit Jaya - super comment :) :)
Thank you Purni and Radha...
Madhu I am glad I was able to revive some good memories for you - by the way what is usilampodi??
very nice....
usilampodi is that some green leaf powder, which is mixed with the shikakai powder?
Then Judyji, gloves is not required, ensure you use that usilampodi at the end and wash your hands...a natural shampoo ;)
Oh ok then I think it is Soapnut (Ritha or Sapindus Mukorossi) you are talking about but that is brown in colour - how come you are getting green colour.
Check this out please and tell me if I am correct or wrong..

Well the powder looks dung green I think..
http://www.zamuta.com/soapnuts/images/soapnuts_powder_8ounce.jpg
Brown powder is the shikakai powder..i.e. soapnut .....there is another green powder, its called chigarepudi in Kannada, mix both the powders and make the paste for cleaning hair...the green powder gives the shampoo effect.... i think that green powder is very rarely used nowadays (haldi/kumkum stores will have samples atleast)...afterall we are moved by many many Shushmitas... & of course Bhipasha-JohnAbraham telling about shampoos ;)
Anirudhji, what an interesting comment! Nice to know at least the Kannada name for the green powder. We use one such green powder here which looks more like the Hibiscus powder, and this was bought from one of the Khaadhi stores in Chennai. I had removed the outer backing, and transferred the inner packet inside a much sturdier packing for a leak-free transport! I don't remember the name, but it is more or less like "Meera" :)
All the Sushmitha Sens, Bips & John can't come close to our Kasthuri manjal powder that we buy from India or Indian stores here in the US! :)
But the soapnut picture is of different soapnut, normally used by jewellers to clean the jewels. The shikakai is quite different http://www.cuisinecuisine.com/images/shikakai.jpg
Right Anirudh the same soapnut is used as added ingredient to shikkakai for body and bounce to hair those days... my sister-in-law used to soak these soapnuts in warm water for about an hour and then beat the mixture with a fork and it used to lather - this was used to wash the hair along with shikkakai...
I didn't ask for it, I just bought the regular Meera powder, but I heard the shop owner talk about the green powder, and the hibiscus powder which the women mix with Meera powder. I thought why not give it a try, it is organic, better than trying out any of the new shampoos, I guess. :)
I see a lot of action around this time. I'm seriously thinking of switching my bedtime to match with our Indian members. What is use of just trying to get some shut-eye and think of ikolam, at the same time? I might as well do something in ikolam. :)
Harere....something big discussion going on....?
I am also joining here...
you can get more Chigarepudi + Antuvalapudi + Shikakaipudi = Karthika powder
But i dont about karthika powder ...one ayurvedic doctor said like this in advertisement

Aha,i missed this discussion.I went for lunch.Any way it is called arappu podi or usilampodi. It is prepared from the leaves of a tree.Sorry, i dont knoe the tree s name.As lata said it is available in khadi stores.
