A story...

I would like to share with you an incident that happened in India, a long time ago. Many years ago, in a village called Melayur, in South India, there lived an unmarried girl in her early twenties. One day, for reasons unknown to many people in her village, she committed suicide by setting herself on fire. Some people believed that her soul did depart, and that a few places in the village were haunted by her spirit. From time to time, people would claim that they heard an unusual, spooky screeching noise during their late night walks, or when they were getting ready to go to bed at night. Back in those days, there were more people who believed in the existence of haunted souls. soundboard.com Also, there lived an old couple in a big corner house in Melayur. Their house was surrounded with big courtyards and various trees like mango, coconut and tamarind trees. There was lot of greenery all around, complete with cows and buffaloes in the cow pen located at the back of the house. I am sure many of you are familiar with the Indian custom where women go to their parents’ home during the last trimester of child-birth. Things were a little busier than usual for the couple, as their oldest daughter, Mrs. D, who was expecting her first child, had come to her parents' house for the delivery of her baby. It was a smooth transition for Mrs D., since this was the same house she lived in prior to her marriage. But, things were not meant to be relaxing for her, for long. In one of her nightly after-dinner walks behind the backyard, she heard an unusually strange screeching noise approaching her. It was a sound that she had heard never before. The sound was accompanied by loud barking of the pet dog, that “followed” the sound running fast from the other side of the courtyard. Needless to say, Mrs. D was terrified, and she ran back as fast as could into the back-entrance to their house. The noise was heard by other members of her family, who had hurried up to the backyard to get her, since they realized that she had gone for a walk. Mrs. D could not stop trembling and shaking for the whole night, after her strange experience with the “haunted spirit”. Her baby girl was born early next morning, and can you guess what they named her? - No, not Kaateri! :) For those of you who think that this episode may be a joke; it is not! Mrs. D and her husband (who made it to the village 3 days later since he was travelling by train from Delhi) named the girl Latha (the Lata Kalaimani that we are all familiar with). To this day, whenever I walk on the same path that my mom walked on that night (in my grandma's village), I am reminded of what happened, and wish it hadn’t happened, regardless of whether I believe in haunted spirits or not. My husband calls me Kaateri sometimes, only because I go for walks after 9pm, most of the days. What to do, that is the only time I get for some much needed exercise! :) Why am I telling you all this? Because I really would like to know if you believe in haunted spirits. Yes or no, or if you have a minute, please give a mini-explanation! If you don't I'll haunt Yoooouuuuuuu until you do! Who has seen the 1973 horror movie, The exorcist? From my family, my dad was the only one who saw that movie back in the day, and I remember him telling us that there were ambulances waiting outside theaters when that movie was screened! I got to see the movie in video many years later (in US), and regretted having watched it! I am a scare-de'cat!

Nice narration, Lata! Ghosts are illusions but their stories are interesting! My grandma who had attended more than 100 deliveries in the family, used to tell us about the 'kutti-chaathaan' she saw when she took a newborn baby's cloths to wash in a pond before sunrise! It was a coincident that the child which suffered initial problems of heath till then became normal after that incident! 'Kakkai utkara pnampazham vizhundada?' I don't know!

One more addition, but not a ghost story. My great grandmother, the one who attended nearly 100 deliveries in the family {refer Jayamohan's post here], she used to say this. In olden days, there were no electric crematoriums and the dead body used to be burnt in the chudukaadu {graveyard].One vettiyaan will see that the body is fully burnt by tossing it etc. My Great grandma used to say that she has seen the burning dead body getting up halfway and sitting in the pyre and the vettiyaan makes it lie down again by pressing it with a stick. We used to get amused at the same time a little frightened also. The science behind this may be like this. {I don't have any authentic info, it is only a guess]. When u burn a coconut broom stick, due to it's oil content, it will bend while burning. Same way. when the body burns, the oil content in our bones may be making the body bend, which we feel like getting up halfway and sitting over the pyre. When it is pressed with a stick, again it goes back to the lying position. I wonder if ikolam site is becoming an ighost site though I thoroughly enjoy the ghost stories...

I have a theory. Ghosts do not like light. In olden days many places in India were poorly or not at all lit during nights. Since ghosts like darkness, they were rampantly moving about. With more population and more living space, there is less darkness nowadays and so ghosts are becoming a vanishing species. Another ghost story, from my father. A few peole were taking shelter in an inn during a dark night. Three or four of them were sharing a room that had an attic. No sooner did the tavellers go to sleep, a strange howling noise was coming from the attic (just like the one latAjI was trying to play from her audio to scare us all :-). The guys got up and they heard the words "Shall I drop, shall I drop down?". They got scared and ran away from the room. But one hardy soul was not willing to brave the outside chill. He said :"Okay, drop down!" Then suddenly it seems lot of gold coins dropped from the attic. The guy thanked the ghost and collected the coins and ran away. In the morning, the others came in and found no trace of the other traveller. When they looked around, they found one or two gold coins left by the missing guy. Then they understood that the "ghost" was offering them the gold coins. They cursed themselves for being timid. The story goes to kanchi and we to our work! Regards! - mOhana

A very interesting story Lata. I can imagine the fright your mom must have had and that too when she was pregnant. Yes, I too have heard this story about the movie exorcist.. I also heard that there were competitions conducted to see who would be brave enough to watch the night show alone and people did dare it. When I was a kid we used to be really scared of these kind of movies and I remember in 1976 we saw the old hindi movie "Mehabooba" starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini which is about rebirth and Hema Malini comes in a ghostly appearance in one of the characters she plays. Co-incidentally at that time in our bedroom we had a calendar which had the picture of Hema and in the night the calendar used to sway from side to side because of the fan - my brother and I used to scare my sister saying that Rathna (Hema's character name in that movie) is coming to haunt us and it used to scare her. It was my dad who got us out of this fear by taking us for the movie Omen and before we went to the theatre he explained to us how the shooting takes place and that the person acting in a particular scary scene is surrounded by lots of people and the works - so thereafter each time we saw a scary movie (though it sometimes succeeded in scaring me) I used to remind myself about the shooting of the scene and then that would help me overcome the fear. I have no personal experience with ghosts as such but I remember as a kid in school we tried 'Table Tapping' which is a medium to talk to spirits and I remember that the coin moved from alphabet to alphabet, though I dont really know whether one of the other girls caused it or not - i was too young to verify. It did scare the hell out of me and I did not venture to attempt it again. Couple of days ago there was a programme telecast on Vijay TV called "Nadandhadhu Enna" and the anchor Gopinath narrated an incident about a ghost in an autorickshaw. It seems that this auto driver was driving home late one night after work and he heard the sound of a woman wailing coming from behind him. The startled guy drove the auto fast and reached home only to suffer from fever for a week. Thereafter he avoided driving his auto in the night but when he was compelled to do so he would hear this lady crying in pain or wailing. Though it terrifies him he is unable to understand the reason for this happening and the only thing he can do now is avoid that situation. It is being related to a story of a pregnant woman who travelled in that auto and died and her spirit haunts that auto or something like that. Hearing experiences of another person is quite different - I would never want to be in a position so as to face any kind of ghost be it a friendly one or a nasty one....

Even though I have so many personal experiences I do not have the courage even to think and narrate 'Ghost' experiences. Another one is Snakes... even the NamaShivaaya poto I told Jayanthi and my husband to take.To be frank, I didnot go thru all ur stories in full.
