Dear Madam,
Apple - 2 nos.
little bit of tamarind paste or juice

Cut the apples into pieces and fry them (No deep frying)until it half cooked alon wiht little asafoetida. Allow it to cool and grind them in a mixie with tamarind juice and salt as needed. It forms a nice chutney for dosa or any tiffin items.
though i like to share a recipe,i do not know one lata didi.but i was attracted by the fresh, rich apples.do u have it in ur garden, how lucky!i have seen few apple trees, with little blossoms at Dehradun in summer.i had a doubt about that tree, which looked so impugned and sketchy thin.but felt lucky to see an apple tree with fruits from ur blog.lovely again!!!ur gardening skills have been displayed through this single photo.
Lata, You can make apple thikku. grate them, , In gingelly oil, splutter mustard, hing and little turmeric powder. add the grated apples,Saute it with salt and red chilli powder for a while. Yummy with curd rice. My colleague"s friend got a few of them from their yard at US. I too got 2 of them and I tried this. Yummy and fast {fast finishing too.] Try.
Yes Jayaji, why not have a recipe exchange too. I'll allot a separate section for it. Recently, one of my friend commented that she is tired of depending on her mom/mom-in-law for things like vadavam and sambarpodi. And you know how all of us are, no matter where we live, we'll never give up our preference for sambars. While Sambar-podi is not that hard to make at home, vadaams are a different story. And, it is so hard to forget about them completely! There is always someone trying to entice you with exotic vadavams whenever they visit from India. So, one of my friend wants to try to make it here (US), and she is trying to recruit her other friends for support! :)
I'm interested in collecting recipes for "stuff" that is not easily available in any restaurants/sweet shop. I am not sure about what is/isn't available in sweet shops in India, but I know that certain sweets like Thirattipaal that my grandma makes, can't be available in stores, even if it is, then it is not going to taste the same! :)
(That's enough lata, don't digress too much, snap out of it, and get back to your digital life) :)
Ms. Raji, nice of you to pass on a recipe, will try to make it.
Deepa, I got fooled by the picture of red apples on an apple sapling that I bought a few years ago from a nursery. I thought I was buying Gala apple sapling, but instead, I ended with Granny smith! :)
Thank you for the thokku recipe Jayanthiji, I'll try it let you know how it turned out. I'll see if I can sneak out with sour apples in my next visit to India. :)
Try mixing apple ,small bit of cinnamon, milk ,sugar and vanilla essence in a blender. Can have it chilled. For more richness can use fresh cream before serving the drink
Yes, they are from our tree from our backyard. They look splendid, but take a bite, and you'll see that it beats our good old tamarind in taste! :(
Sumathi, I'll try your smoothie recipe one of these days.
Rajam, I figured from Jayaji's murukku picture that she must be an expert in other exotic-recipes too! I'll bother her one of these months to give me an "easy" vadaam recipe.
Lata in our house almost all ladies are good in making kaimurukku. For my elder brother's son's upanayanam we 4 sisters jointly made 7-line seer murukku (5o nos) for the function. It was fun. Have u seen kolam designs in wedding Seer Murukku?
Jaya will give u receipe to make vadaam maavu and tips how to eat it while making. Donot tell Judy.. otherwise she will use that maavu for her kolams!
Wedding seer murukku! I think I've heard my friends talk about it, but since I've only attended one wedding so far, after moving from India to California, I didn't get a chance to be in any weddings in India. Usually, there are no south indian weddings in the summer months of July/August, and that is when I get to visit India (if at all I do). :)
I remember my granny's friends use to visit her at night to help her family make appalams which used to last her for the entire year. And, my cousins and I used to ask them for some fresh applam dough-balls.
I envy three of my friends who will be leaving next week (to India) for their summer vacation :(
